Assisted Living in Killeen Texas

Exactly what is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a type of senior housing for older individuals to get support with activities of daily living (ADLs). Assisted living residents ordinarily get support with bathing, personal grooming, medication supervision, dressing, and meals.

Assisted living differs from a skilled nursing community where people receive nursing care night and day. Residents in assisted living usually have access to staff 24 hours a day but likewise have the chance to take part in engaging activities while enjoying a strong sense of community. The types of care solutions provided in assisted living may differ with some communities providing support for seniors with particular medical requirements such as cognitive impairment from Alzheimer’s disease or a related kind of dementia, diabetes or incontinence care.

Knowing what kind of senior housing is most beneficial for you personally or your loved one can be difficult. Speak with your doctor to ensure you are picking the right degree of care or call our Senior Living Advisors who are experts in senior care and can help you find a senior care community in Killeen that meets your preferences.

What Solutions Are Available?

Generally, just about all assisted living communities offer a selection of activities, amenities, meal plans, and transportation. Offerings offered in assisted living may differ greatly in each facility.

Other features often seen in assisted living include:

  • Access to medical services
  • Usage of therapies on-site and off-site
  • Activities and entertainment calendar
  • Exercise and nutrition programs
  • Housekeeping services, including linen services
  • Meal preparation
  • Medication management
  • Transportation services

How Do I Tour Assisted Living Facilities?

There are 43 assisted living facilities in the greater Killeen area. It is highly recommended that you tour at least three to five assisted living communities before choosing the best one for you and your loved one. Touring communities will help you uncover what options are available, and what your personal preferences are, and will ultimately assist you in making a decision about what is most useful for a family member. Call or call A Place for Mom and we will help you set up a tour at your desired community.

Below are a few of the top questions you have to be all set to ask during your visit:

  • Are the current occupants friendly and content?
  • Will there be services not contained in the monthly charge? If so, what exactly are they and just how much will they cost?
  • Is there a nurse available around the clock?
  • Is an initial assessment required before move in?
  • Will there be a waitlist? If so, how long might it be before you can move in?
  • Is there a courtyard or patio for occupants to enjoy space outdoors?
  • What are your apartment accommodation alternatives?
  • What are your billing and monthly payment policies and procedures?
  • What does the outside of the community look like? Is it neat and tidy?
  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio? Are the staff members involved? Friendly?
  • What's your discharge plan?
  • What's your medication administration policy?
  • What kind of knowledge and training do your staff members have?

Will Medicare Pay for Assisted Living?

Medicare can play an essential role in paying for some senior care. However, it is vital to comprehend what Medicare will pay for - and what it does not.

If the beneficiary has been in hospitalized for at least three days, Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing care associated with hospitalization for 100 days, if your physician recommends it. However, Medicare covers only short-term, non-custodial care. Therefore Medicare will not cover long-term nursing home stays or assisted living. Additionally, Medicare typically will not cover memory care because the care necessary for dementia is viewed as custodial care. Medicare covers medically necessary skilled health care at a nursing home only if you need short-term skilled care for an illness or injury and you meet selected conditions.

How Can I See Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings in Texas?

The state of Texas offers great usage of its assisted living facility records through its Department of Health and Human Services website. Data available includes licensed assisted living facilities that are updated frequently, and information regarding assisted living licensing and violations.

Texas defines assisted living as featuring “individualized health and personal care assistance in a homelike setting with an emphasis on personal dignity, autonomy, independence, and privacy. Facilities can be large apartment-like settings or private residences. Services include bathing, dressing, meals, administering or supervising medication, and toileting.”

In Texas, there are two main types of assisted living. The Texas Health and Human Services licenses assisted living communities based on residents' physical and mental ability to evacuate the facility in an crisis and whether nighttime attendance is required.

  • Type A: Cares for residents who do not require routine attendance during sleeping hours and are can follow directions during an emergency.
  • Type B: Residents require staff assistance to evacuate, are not capable of following directions in an emergency and require nighttime attendance.

How can I Choose the best Assisted Living Facility?

Selecting the right community requires considerable thought and consideration, so invest some time when reviewing the abilities, guidelines, and assistance offered by those communities.

When touring a community, consider these important factors:

  • Activities: Check out the facility calendar of occasions. Do they meet your loved one’s hobbies? Do they acknowledge resident input? Schedule your tour in conjunction with facility events. Ask the manager if you can view the activities as well as take part. Are the activities and events well attended? Do they foster a feeling of community? Does the staff seem to be enjoying the activity also? Do the get-togethers and activities vary in size and type? Do they include trips and outings away from the community? Ask about faith based services, if it's important to you and your family.
  • Cleanliness: How does the community smell? Is the community clean? Look past the visible fixtures and take a closer look into corners, baseboards, and windows. Ask how frequently house cleaning services are furnished in the private living space. Be sure you get full details on the types of repair provided and the expected response times. Ask for specifics on laundry options.
  • Friendliness: Be sure to acquire a good understanding of the staffing structure. How many people are actually involved with residents’ care? Make sure you receive an introduction to the management team. It is important that you have confidence in the property’s staff. How do staff members connect to current residents? Do they listen and make eye contact?
  • Meals: When touring facilities, it is important to discuss entree selections and learn about dining times, options and procedures. Is mealtime at an established period? Is room service made available? Ask when you can join them for a meal to be sure the food is enjoyable. It's not only a great way to sample the cuisine, but it’s an excellent chance to meet other residents. Make sure you discuss what happens if a resident is unable to get it to the dining area for meals.
  • Go with your instincts: Can you envisage your family member feeling happy here? Do you feel at ease? Are the staff and residents amenable, welcoming and genial? If one of you has a bad sense, don’t hesitate to explore additional options.
  • Reputation: Ask around! Seek the assistance of residents and family members, former and present, for their honest beliefs about the community. Many facilities have a resident council that will be happy to answer all of your questions. Also you can read some of the 798 family reviews on our website.
  • Security and safety: Safety and security features are extremely important and offer reassurance for the caregiver, especially for seniors seeking memory care. Be sure that bathrooms are accessible and have grab bars in convenient spots. Does the facility have an emergency call system in each unit? What happens if a resident does wander? Learn about other security features in living quarters and through the entire community. Make sure you learn about staffing patterns to determine who's on-site all the time to assist residents. Are there registered nurses on-site? How do staffing patterns differ at night? How will the community assist or manage residents’ medication needs?

Regardless, how to finance senior care is definitely an obstacle for care. Many families choose to finance a move to assisted living through the sale of a residence or personal savings, but for some persons, this might not exactly be a choice.

Here are other options that will assist you pay for assisted living:

  • Life Insurance Policies: If the senior moving into assisted living has a life insurance policy, you may be able to liquidate the policy and receive funds right now to cover senior care costs. Different restrictions and regulations apply depending on the kind of insurance policy you have, so call a financial advisor or eldercare attorney to determine more about your alternatives.
  • Reverse Mortgages: For senior couples who need different degrees of care, a reverse mortgage can be a good method for just one person to move into assisted living while another remains in the home. A reverse mortgage allows home owners aged 62 or older to borrow on their home equity. To learn more, contact the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to discover a reverse mortgage counseling agency near you.
  • Veterans Benefits: Many veterans are unaware they are eligible for senior care benefits. One sometimes overlooked benefit is the Veterans Aid and Attendance, which has helped a large number of families afford assisted living. To qualify, veterans must be at least 65 years old and have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during what the Veterans Administration considers ‘active wartime periods’. Qualifying widows and widowers of veterans can also be able to receive benefits. With the current average age of U.S. veterans at 64 years old, it’s worth it to determine if your loved one may qualify for benefits. 5 Questions to Ask When Touring an Assisted Living Community

There’s no question that choosing an assisted living facility can be overwhelming. However, considering these five important things when thinking about making the move to assisted living will help you make a better-informed decision:

  1. How many staff are available to assist at night? Some assisted living communities provide nursing staff around the clock, while others may have more generalized help available after hours.
  2. Is there a waitlist? Here is where doing your homework can actually are worth it - plan ahead! Popular communities can fill fast. If the main one you like is not available, enquire about the waitlist and what the facility’s policy is for taking care of it. Many communities will ask for a deposit plus some communities have internal lists for special health care needs.
  3. Is there a patio space? Moving to assisted living does not mean you or your family member needs to give up a beloved back garden or patio space. If having access to a gardening area, a patio or a courtyard is important for your family member, visit a community that gives residents that space. Various larger assisted living facilities have a selection of yard, with features such as BBQ areas, gardens, and walking paths.
  4. What is the staff-to-resident ratio? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 25% of assisted living facilities have a ratio of one personal care associates for each 23 residents. Staffing may differ widely depending on the size of the facility, so be sure to enquire about the services you are interested in. Ultimately, you need to know if this community will provide your loved one with the support they need.
  5. What services are as part of the monthly charge? Understand what is included in the normal fee arrangement and what might incur additional expense before signing any contract. Some facilities use a fee-for-service model, or a la carte pricing, which means they ask for a monthly fee for rent and meals but additional charges for things like medication management. Others may use a tiered pricing model where different degrees of care are billed differently costs.
