An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers assistance, care, and supervision to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently offer help with appointments and transportation, aid with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. The state of Ohio maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this type of community. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These include assistance with self-administration of medication, activities, medication administration, and intermittent nursing services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observation, reminders, and assistance organizing medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, cognitive status review, psychological history, and medication review. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17.
