Assisted living communities provide coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities frequently provide supervision of care, assistance with transportation and appointments, and help with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, continuing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include pharmaceutical services, assist with personal care, recreational activities, and limited nursing care. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, routines and preferences, nursing needs, and a health care assessment. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include assisted living concepts, caring for residents with impairment, abuse and neglect, and residents rights. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and monitor dosage. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, provide three meals a day, and maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents.
