Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social events as well as personalized help. The services offered often involve support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing care, dementia care, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, administer medication, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include social work services, assist with personal care, dietary services, and transportation. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, a health care assessment, a level of care assessment, and nursing needs. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include caring for residents with impairment, infection control/prevention, residents rights, and Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents.
