An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers care, support, and supervision to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Services provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In some situations, communities may offer continuing care, dementia care, or respite. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has specific regulations related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, administer medication, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, provide three meals a day, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These include: pain management, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, emergency plans and procedures, and assisted living concepts. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include recreational activities, pharmaceutical services, limited nursing care, and assist with personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, routines and preferences, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and a level of care assessment. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
