An assisted living community is a residential community which offers aid, care, and supervision to healthy seniors who do not require skilled nursing support. Services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In select cases, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or continuing care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses this community type. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: the resident assessment process, including standard precautions, basic food safety, and basic first-aid. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be well-balanced, meals must be properly prepared, and programs must provide three meals a day and snacks. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications, residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, and staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, and occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessed on psychiatric conditions, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, ability to self-administer medication, and treatment requirements. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
