An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, aid, and supervision to healthy individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. The services provided often involve support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or nursing. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, and occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness, fire and life safety, residents’ rights, and including standard precautions. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission, and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be well-balanced, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, meals must be palatable, and meals must be varied. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months, activities of daily living needs, and problematic behaviors.
