Assisted Living in Louisville, KY

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living falls under the category of long-term care, and is a service offered to seniors in need of varying levels of assistance with daily activities, but who do not require the constant medical attention provided by nursing homes. Some of the types of assistance provided can include cooking and serving meals, healthcare management, games and entertainment, transportation to the doctor or grocery store and in some places, memory care.

What Is Senior Living Like in Louisville, KY?

Louisville, KY is a place for those who prefer a slower-paced lifestyle without the hustle and bustle of a larger city. That being said, there are certainly plenty of amenities and exciting places to visit around here. There are numerous historical landmarks and museums that are perfect places for those who pride themselves in their knowledge of history, or who are curious to learn more about the origins of our nation. Southern comfort food is one of the favorite things available for many people living in the area, and there is no shortage of excellent cuisine. Like much of the rest of Kentucky, there is a great deal of natural beauty. The local flora and fauna thrives in the presence of the Ohio river that runs through the city, which also makes it an excellent location for fishing.

Those who are fans of racing may want to check out the Kentucky Derby, held every year, as well as the Great Steamboat Race or the Great Balloon Race. Around Memorial Day, The Kentucky Bourbon Festival and the Kentucky State Fair also offer lots of excitement and shopping opportunities, making for a great time of year to visit your loved one and have a nice day out as well.

What Services Are Available?

The services provided by assisted living communities can vary from state to state. In Louisville, KY, most of the facilities offer the following:

  • Laundry services and housekeeping assistance
  • Beauty salons or on-site beauticians
  • Devotional services provided on-site
  • Snacks and food that are home-made
  • Housing arrangements that welcome animal companions
In addition, some facilities may offer additional services including paid utilities, occupational and speech therapy, and local or on-site nurse practitioners that may be available up to 24 hours a day, depending on the community.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Louisville, KY?

Our database compiles the costs reported by seniors living in the area in order to produce an effective estimation of what your family could be paying. The average cost of assisted living in Kentucky is currently $3,613 a month. In the Louisville area, the cost is pretty close to the average, coming in at $3,772 a month. Those who are seeking memory care services can expect to pay $4,596 a month on average in the state of Kentucky, and $4,729 in the Louisville area.

How Are Assisted Living Costs Determined?

In order to understand if your family will be paying for a place that is above or below the average cost in the area, it is helpful to learn why the costs are what they are. A big determining factor in the cost of a facility is the level of luxury it offers. For example, does the facility provide basic meals, or does it cook gourmet meals every day? Additionally, certain areas have higher rent costs which translate to higher costs for assisted living. If you are looking for a place right in the urban area, your loved one will easily be able to access all the activities a city has to offer, but it might mean paying a higher price. On the other hand, a rural area tends to be a farther trek to get to the city, but can often cost much less.

If your loved one requires a higher level of care, this can lead to a higher bill for their stay. Someone who needs to take 12 pills a day is going to run up a higher bill for medical management than someone who only needs 1-4 pills a day. Another thing to consider is the size of the room. Does your loved one want a basic and simple space, or do they have a lot of belongings that require a larger room to set out? Once constant in costs of assisted living is that the bigger the room is, the higher the cost will be.

How Can I Afford/Pay for Assisted Living?

Determining the way you can afford the costs of assisted living is just as important as finding a place that will allow your loved one to feel comfortable and happy. There are lots of payment options that are helpful to have in mind as you conduct your search.

Veterans enjoy one of the biggest boons when looking for a place to stay, as they receive benefits from the government that can be used to offset assisted living costs. While these benefits exist for all veterans, the amount provided depends on the person, but on average the veterans benefit pay is about $2,000 a month. Another form of benefit provided is sometimes offered by an insurance policy. This, again, varies from person to person, and the best way to find out how much cost can be offset is to speak with your loved one’s insurance advisor.

There is also a specific type of insurance called long-term care insurance, that is specifically arranged to start paying out when the policyholder checks into an assisted living facility. Some very good policies may even cover the entire cost of living in such a facility. Finding out if your loved one has this kind of policy and then checking in with their insurance company can be a good first step.

Furthermore, there can be personal forms of income that will cover the costs of assisted living, though these will all depend on the financial status of your loved one at the time you are looking at moving them to assisted living. Often, when someone makes the move to an assisted living facility, they will sell their home. The equity provided from this sale can be enough to afford years of assisted living. Another way to pay is to look at savings, investments, and residual income from business. There may also be pension payments that can be used to pay these costs. Speak with your loved one to make sure you are on the same page as to what amount of money is coming in, and how it will be used to pay for assisted living.

Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings in Louisville

We examine the frequency of state inspections, ease of accessing information and searchability of state indexes, as well as other criteria in determining our rating for states’ assisted living records and reports. Kentucky received a rating of basic for the aspects we evaluated. One thing to keep in mind about Kentucky is that it does not provide online information about complaints, violations and inspections.

While Kentucky rates in the lowest quartile of states when it comes to transparency of information about assisted living facilities, it is possible to find information online about the capacity of different facilities, special care for licensing and a list of all facilities in the state. The state does conduct inspections of facilities every 24 months.

How Do I Tour Assisted Living Facilities?

When deciding on the place where your loved one will be staying in the long term, it is important to see it for yourself before making a decision. The first step before going to tour facilities is to narrow down your options to four or five locations at most. This is a process that A Place for Mom can help you with. When you do go to tour facilities, have a list of questions that you can ask the staff. One important thing to look for is a staff that is ready and willing to answer all of your questions. You should also take the time to have lunch or dinner at the facility to get a sense of the quality of food that your loved one will be served.

Some other things to look for are the security level of the facility, including the presence of a sprinkler system and marking of exits in case of a fire. You will want to pay attention to the cleanliness of the building and make sure it is odor-free. Every good assisted living facility should be walker and wheelchair accessible, and this includes the presence of elevators for those facilities with multiple floors, and handrails for those who are less steady on their feet. You will also want to look at the lighting and floor plan of the facility.

How Do I Make the Right Choice?

It takes time to find the right place for your loved one to stay, but a careful search where all the right questions are asked can make a substantial difference in the end result. The location, services offered, friendliness of the staff and the cost are all things to take into consideration for every facility you consider.

Our dedicated team is here to help you in every step of this process. We will assist you with touring, finding reviews and answering questions about these facilities, and we will provide you with all of this aid at no additional cost to you and your family. If you are seeking help in finding a comfortable fit for your loved one, you can set up a free consultation with one of our Senior Living Advisors.
