Assisted living communities provide personal care, recreational activities, and oversight to persons who are on average 65 years old. The types of service provided often include help with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, skilled nursing care, or hospice. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medications label, communicating with the resident’s physician and pharmacy for prescriptions, and reminding the resident to take medications. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include community policies, emergency procedures, orientation within 90 days of hire, and adult abuse and neglect . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated to meet the ongoing needs of the resident and functional needs assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care services, transportation, assistance with activities of daily living, and self-administration of medications. Public assistance is available through state Assistance programs for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
