Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individualized support. The types of service offered often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select situations, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing care. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. Indiana maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. Indiana State Department of Health regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include comprehensive nursing care, a nursing diagnosis, activities and programs appropriate to residents’ abilities and interests, and scheduled transportation for community-based activities. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a negotiated risk plan will be established, evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, A comprehensive assessment, and community will identify scope of care based on evaluation. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include 40 hours of continuing education every 2 years, ethical considerations, a review of the community’s policies and procedures, and fire and disaster preparedness. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must consider residents’ food allergies, communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences, communities must provide three meals a day, and meals must provide a balanced distribution of the daily nutritional requirements. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program. Communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified, Medications may be administered under physician’s order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides, and preparation of prescribed medications.
