Assisted living communities offer organized social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized assistance. The types of service provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or skilled nursing care. In Kentucky, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $41,958 . Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as functional needs assessment and assessment must be updated to meet the ongoing needs of the resident. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening the dosage packaging or medication container, assistance with self-administration, and storing the medication in a manner that is accessible to the resident. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include no provisions identified. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 5. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through state Assistance programs for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
