An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides supervision, support, and aid to healthy seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Services offered often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or nursing care. In Kentucky, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $41,958 . The state of Kentucky has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living regulates this type of community. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include adult abuse and neglect , cardiopulmonary resuscitation, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and adult first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration, opening the dosage packaging or medication container, and reading the medications label. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated to meet the ongoing needs of the resident and functional needs assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include no provisions identified. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 5. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include scheduled social activities determined by resident preferences, shopping, chores, and transportation. Public assistance is available through state Assistance programs for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
