Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and assistance for seniors who might require support with dressing or cooking. Services provided often include support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select instances, communities may provide hospice, nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains specific rules related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation licenses this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, and staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , medical examination report, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and communities must document such assessment. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include emergency evacuation, 26 hours of training plus a competency test, infection control, and universal precautions. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, and the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care services, nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living .
