Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individualized care. The types of service offered often include help with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In select instances, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living , personal care services, and nursing services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, licensed nursing staff may administer medications, and reading the label. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , communities must document such assessment, medical examination report, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include providing assistance with activities of daily living, resident rights, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, and reporting incidents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1.
