Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer healthcare, oversight, and social events to people who are about 65 years of age or older. The types of service provided often involve support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, hospice, or “aging in place”. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions, 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, the aging process, and need for professionall help.
