Assisted living communities provide residential communities and assistance to your loved one who might need help with things such as washing or preparing meals. Assisted living communities often offer chances for social activity, aid with daily activities, and supervision of care. In certain cases, communities may offer dementia care, skilled nursing care, or “aging in place”. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this type of community. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: how to recognize early signs of illness, residents’ rights, Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years, and 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
