Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, assistance, and care to self-sufficient persons who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities frequently offer assistance with transportation and appointments, outings for recreational activity, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, respite, or Alzheimer’s care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this type of community. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include first-aid, residents’ rights, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, and the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions.
