Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers assistance, support, and care to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, skilled nursing, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, residents’ rights, the aging process, and 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
