Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individual support. The types of service provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. In some situations, communities may offer hospice, nursing, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this community type. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These include: 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, how to recognize early signs of illness, and need for professionall help. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
