Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and assistance to persons who might need a helping hand with taking medication or cooking food. Assisted living communities commonly offer assistance with appointments and transit, aid with daily activities, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or nursing care. Wisconsin maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this type of community. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These include: challenging behaviors, medication management, community policies and procedures, and development of service plans. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity programming for persons with dementia, independent living skills, behavior management, and information and referral.
