An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, supervision, and assistance to healthy seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. The services provided often include aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In some situations, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing, or hospice. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, and practitioner. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, mental illness, level of personal care needs, and activities and service preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, medication administration, and resident self-administration of medication. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: continuing education, HIV/AIDS, safety training (3 hours), and First-aid and CPR. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include basic personal care services, communities choose to provide certain health support services, general responsibility for each resident, and promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan.
