Assisted living communities offer personal care, supervision, and social opportunities to people around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often involve help with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, respite, or dementia care. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, basic personal care services, communities choose to provide certain health support services, and administration of health care treatments. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration provided through nurse delegation, resident self-administration of medication, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES). Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These areas include HIV/AIDS, First-aid and CPR, safety training (3 hours), and nurse delegation and core diabetes. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, level of personal care needs, mental illness, and an initial comprehensive exam including medical history . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, practitioner, and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible.
