Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, healthcare, and oversight to persons around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often offer opportunities for social activity, care supervision, and support with daily activities. In certain instances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) licenses this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include communities choose to provide certain health support services, assistance with ADLs, basic personal care services, and administration of health care treatments. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and practitioner. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include safety training (3 hours), specialty training, nurse delegation and core diabetes, and First-aid and CPR. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration provided through nurse delegation, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental illness, preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , and level of personal care needs.
