Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and health care to seniors who might need a helping hand with things such as bathing or dressing. Services offered often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may offer dementia care, nursing, or “aging in place”. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) certifies this community type. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES). Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include HIV/AIDS, basic training (70 hours), continuing education, and specialty training. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident self-administration of medication, medication administration, and medication administration provided through nurse delegation. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, general responsibility for each resident, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, and communities choose to provide certain health support services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, mental illness, preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, and significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include practitioner, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible.
