Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and health care for persons who might need a helping hand with things such as cooking food or bathing. The types of service provided often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, continuing care, or respite. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) supervises this community type. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff must obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: nurse delegation and core diabetes, First-aid and CPR, basic training (70 hours), and continuing education. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general responsibility for each resident, basic personal care services, assistance with ADLs, and administration of health care treatments. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and practitioner. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental illness, level of personal care needs, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , and activities and service preferences. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident self-administration of medication, medication administration, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services.
