Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide apartment style housing and social events as well as personalized support. The types of service provided often include aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select situations, communities may offer respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, practitioner, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , level of personal care needs, and activities and service preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident self-administration of medication, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and medication administration. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include basic training (70 hours), nurse delegation and core diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and First-aid and CPR. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general responsibility for each resident, administration of health care treatments, basic personal care services, and assistance with ADLs.
