Assisted living communities administer care, social opportunities, and oversight to individuals who are around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often include assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select cases, communities may offer nursing care, respite, or “aging in place”. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, activities and service preferences, significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, and preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and resident self-administration of medication. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, and practitioner. Staff must obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include First-aid and CPR, HIV/AIDS, basic training (70 hours), and nurse delegation and core diabetes. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, basic personal care services, general responsibility for each resident, and communities choose to provide certain health support services.
