Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities arrange residential communities and health care to people who need help with self-administering medication or dressing. Assisted living facilities usually provide supervision of care, help with daily activities, and outings for leisurely activity. In select situations, facilities may provide respite, dementia care, or continuing care. The state of Texas maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of facility. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living facilities licenses this facility type. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, supervision or direct administration of medications, general supervision or oversight, and assistance with activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents’ individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment . There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: food and nutrition services, basic emergency first-aid, basic principles of management, and resident and provider rights and responsibilities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program--called STAR+PLUS.This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident's physician must be provided according to the service plan, facilities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and supervision of a resident's medication regimen.
