Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer recreational activities, supervision, and healthcare to persons around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often include support with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In some situations, communities may offer skilled nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. Texas has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning. Staff members obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include assisted living standards, resident and provider rights and responsibilities, basic principles of management, and accessibility requirements. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, personal care, supervision or direct administration of medications, and activity and/or social program for residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and assisting residents with taking medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment .
