Assisted living communities arrange organized living communities and health care for people who require support with things such as mobility or cooking food. The types of service offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, nursing care, or continuing care. The state of Texas has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, obtaining medications from a pharmacy, and assisting residents with taking medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity and/or social program for residents, personal care, general supervision or oversight, and supervision or direct administration of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: resident characteristics (including dementia), assisted living standards, food and nutrition services, and basic emergency first-aid. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room.
