Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social events as well as individualized support. The types of service provided often include support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, hospice, or respite. The state of Texas has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this type of community. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and assisting residents with taking medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, activity and/or social program for residents, general supervision or oversight, and personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment . Staff must obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include resident assessment, skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, skills for working with residents, and federal laws.
