Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as personalized assistance. Assisted living communities usually provide chances for organized activity, help with daily activities, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or “aging in place”. Texas has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, basic emergency first-aid, abuse/neglect, and accessibility requirements. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, returning medications to the proper locked areas, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, supervision or direct administration of medications, and activity and/or social program for residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS.
