Assisted living communities offer apartment-style housing and social events as well as individualized assistance. Services offered often involve support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In select situations, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. The state of Tennessee has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident while taking medication, opening dosage packaging, and assistance with reading labels. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise, medication administration, and assistance with activities of daily living. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: applicable state rules and regulations, food service, emergency procedures, and healthy lifestyles. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, and must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with health services, physical assessment, recreational and social activities, and arrangements for visits by or to health care providers.
