Assisted living communities provide social interaction, oversight, and healthcare to people who are about 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly offer help with transportation and appointments, supervision of care, and outings for recreational activity. In some cases, communities may provide respite, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing. The state of Tennessee has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities governs this type of community. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, and No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as recreational and social activities, assistance with health services, physical assessment, and arrangements for visits by or to health care providers. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These include: health care management, financial management, fire safety disaster preparedness, and nutrition. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, part-time intermittent nursing care, the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise, and laundry services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with reading labels, opening dosage packaging, and observing the resident while taking medication.
