Assisted living communities arrange organized living communities and aid to people who might require support with everyday activities such as taking medication or dressing. The types of service offered often involve aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer nursing care, hospice, or respite. The state of South Carolina maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing supervises this type of community. There is a maximum occupancy of 3 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, monitor blood sugar levels, and administer routine medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include at least one structured recreation activity each day, assistance with ADLs, transportation, and medication assistance. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, and dietary needs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include medication management including storage, administration, receiving orders, securing medications, interactions, and adverse reactions., Confidentiality of resident information and records and review of the Bill of Rights for Long-Term Care communities., Basic first-aid, and emergency procedures.
