Assisted living communities provide social events, care, and supervision to individuals around 65 years old. The services provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, continuing care, or hospice. The state of South Carolina has specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . Staff are required to obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include medication management including storage, administration, receiving orders, securing medications, interactions, and adverse reactions., management/care of persons with contagious and/or communicable disease, emergency procedures, and Basic first-aid. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication assistance, assistance with ADLs, transportation, and at least one structured recreation activity each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with ADLs for the resident, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, dietary needs, and recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, administer routine medications, and staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. The maximum occupancy is 3 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
