Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and assistance for seniors who might need support with dressing or washing. The services offered often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer dementia care, skilled nursing, or continuing care. South Carolina maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as dietary needs, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, and assistance with ADLs for the resident. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, administer routine medications, and staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include at least one structured recreation activity each day, medication assistance, assistance with ADLs, and transportation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include procedures for checking and recording vital signs, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for designated staff members/volunteers to ensure that there is a certified staff member/volunteer present whenever residents are in the community, emergency procedures, and use of restraints . There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 3 residents per room.
