Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers care, support, and assistance to healthy seniors who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often provide care supervision, chances for organized activity, and aid with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, dementia care, or hospice. The state of South Carolina maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, monitor blood sugar levels, and administer routine medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with ADLs for the resident, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, and recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, transportation, at least one structured recreation activity each day, and medication assistance. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 3 residents to a room. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include Confidentiality of resident information and records and review of the Bill of Rights for Long-Term Care communities., medication management including storage, administration, receiving orders, securing medications, interactions, and adverse reactions., management/care of persons with contagious and/or communicable disease, and Care of persons specific to the physical/mental condition being cared for in the community.
