Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and aid for persons who require a helping hand with cooking meals or self-administering medication. The types of service provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, continuing care, or respite. Ohio has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this community type. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These include supervision, personal care, intermittent nursing services, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, medication review, psychical history, and psychological history. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include handing medications to resident, assistance opening and taking medication, and observation. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare.
