Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, aid, and support to healthy persons who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities frequently offer supervision of care, aid with transportation and appointments, and assistance with daily activities. In select situations, communities may offer nursing care, hospice, or respite. The state of Ohio maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, medical diagnoses, cognitive status review, and psychical history. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medication, personal care, activities, and medication administration. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: securing emergency assistance, residents rights, community procedures, and job responsibilities. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance opening and taking medication, handing medications to resident, and reminders.
