An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, support, and aid to self-sufficient seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually provide support with daily activities, opportunities for recreational activity, and help with appointments and transit. In some cases, communities may provide “aging in place”, nursing, or hospice. The state of Ohio maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, functional status assessment, medication review, and psychological history. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying labels, reminders, and assistance opening and taking medication. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These areas include job responsibilities, community procedures, securing emergency assistance, and residents rights. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medication, activities, and personal care.
