Assisted living communities administer recreational activities, oversight, and personal care to persons around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with the activities of daily life, aid with transportation and appointments, and chances for leisurely activity. In certain instances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services certifies this community type. Staff must obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: pain management, residents rights, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, and caring for residents with impairment. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, dietary services, pharmaceutical services, and assist with personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, a health care assessment, a level of care assessment, and routines and preferences.
