Assisted living communities offer social interaction, personal care, and supervision to individuals who are on average 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually offer care supervision, chances for leisurely activity, and aid with transit and appointments. In certain situations, communities may provide hospice, respite, or nursing. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey has specific regulations related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include pharmaceutical services, social work services, limited nursing care, and recreational activities. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include pain management, infection control/prevention, caring for residents with impairment, and abuse and neglect. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, a health care assessment, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and nursing needs. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and administer medication.
