Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care to people who need support with everyday activities such as bathing or dressing. The types of service offered often include assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide respite, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey maintains specific statutes related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services governs this community type. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, transportation, social work services, and assist with personal care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. Staff are required to receive education in a number of areas. These areas include Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, emergency plans and procedures, abuse and neglect, and residents rights. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, a level of care assessment, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and routines and preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication.
