Assisted living communities provide oversight, social opportunities, and care to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly provide help with transportation and appointments, support with daily activities, and chances for leisurely activity. In certain instances, communities may offer hospice, nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, nursing needs, and a health care assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Staff must obtain training in a number of fields. These include: infection control/prevention, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, abuse and neglect, and emergency plans and procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include pharmaceutical services, transportation, limited nursing care, and social work services.
