Assisted living communities provide coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as individualized help. The types of service offered often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select situations, communities may provide skilled nursing care, hospice, or respite. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assist with personal care, pharmaceutical services, limited nursing care, and social work services. Staff must obtain education in a number of areas. These include: Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, assisted living concepts, residents rights, and emergency plans and procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, administer medication, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, a level of care assessment, a health care assessment, and nursing needs.
