Assisted Living in St. Louis

What Is Assisted Living?

When seniors struggle to maintain their independence, they can benefit from the long-term care offered at an assisted living facility. Designed to support seniors in the things they cannot do easily, such as dressing, bathing, managing medications, and toileting, they allow seniors to keep their dignity and independence.

Assisted living can be an opportunity for seniors to reach out socially as they spend time visiting in common areas, share meals with others, and get to know new people. Skilled staff are there to lend support when residents need a helping hand.

A nursing home is where 24-hour skilled nursing care is necessary, as residents there are unable to care for themselves. Knowing the distinction between the facility types will save you a lot of time and effort as you search for the right assisted living situation.

What Is Senior Living Like in St. Louis, MO?

With six assisted living communities to choose from in the city, you will find that visiting your loved one there is a pleasure, and they may also enjoy outings in the area. St. Louis is an inland port on the Mississippi River, which merges with the Missouri river just north of the city, which was founded by French fur traders and named after King Louis IX of France.

Many national sporting leagues including the St. Louis Cardinals make Busch Stadium in St. Louis their home base. The city was the site of the World Fair in 1904, when 20 million tourists flooded the area to take it all in, including a palace for international visitors, over 1500 other structures and Forest Park – one of the largest urban parks in the country.

The arts definitely have a place in the city, with the St. Louis Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis, Missouri History Museum, Pulitzer Arts Foundation and the Saint Louis Symphony to experience. Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings in St-Louis, MO

It would be helpful to know how the facilities you are considering in St. Louis function. Ratings and licensing information are available for many of the assisted living facilities in the St. Louis area. Not all senior homes operate on an equal footing. Some may only help with basics while others may assist with incontinence and feeding if needed.

To a great extent, those differences are due to the licensing – A higher degree of licensing generally offers a higher level of care. Checking the ratings and licensing for individual facilities so that you can understand which are better can make things more clear.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in St-Louis, MO?

Expense is a big consideration. Prices for assisted living facilities in St. Louis range from $1675 to $20000 and the state average is $3,990. Check out current rates to ensure you understand what is needed. Assisted living in the surrounding area may vary from this pricing and may be considered as well.

Understanding Assisted Living Cost

Expenses for assisted living in St. Louis, MO can vary from place to place and are dependent on the services offered. Making sense of the costs and understanding the breakdown is essential. Assisted living facilities usually charge in one of two ways: The most common method is a flat rate monthly fee, which covers the gamut of services offered whether you need to use them or not. This may be a cost-effective way to go if your loved one requires, or wants, more done for them.

The “a la carte” system of charges allows you to select which services you want to be provided and which you prefer to take care of yourself in order to save money. For example, you may opt to take them to their appointments or do their laundry and not have to pay for those services. Consulting with senior-care advisors can help you decide which plan is best suited for your family. Watch for hidden costs – you may be able to purchase a package of disposable absorbent underwear for $12, but if the facility provides them, they may charge you $20. Make sure to get a complete breakdown of the charges in writing and go over it carefully before deciding. Visit with someone who can help you understand several ways to make it more manageable, such as selling your loved one’s home or getting temporary help from Medicare.

How Do You Know When It's Time for Assisted Living?

Seniors add depth and richness to family life, but there may come a time when they need more physical support than you are able to provide due to employment, location or personal health issues. Things like dressing themselves, moving around the house or getting to the toilet may become difficult. Diminishing eyesight may make self-care difficult, or there may be issues with remembering to take medications.

Dementia or Alzheimer’s are frequently accompanied by personality changes, including agitation, which makes care more emotionally difficult. Loss of the abilities which allow them to live on their own, or that take a toll on you as a caregiver may be a sign that it is time to make a change. A good way to gauge their level of independence is with the following list of ADLs and IADLs.

What Are ADLs and IADLs?

ADLs, or Activities of Daily Living, are those things people do to take care of themselves- including dressing, bathing safely and making it to the toilet on time. Feeding themselves, walking and transferring from a bed to a wheelchair are also important ADLs.

The IADLs, or the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living are about being able to remain in their own home independently – Dishes, housekeeping, running the laundry, grocery shopping and meal preparation. Managing finances and using the telephone to make appointments or call for help is also important.

When a senior loses the ability to do the IADLs, they may need to live with a family member in order to be safe or may choose to move to assisted living at that point. When they also lose the ADLs, it is time to take that option seriously in order for them to receive the care and attention they need and deserve.
