Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Missouri’s largest metropolitan area, St. Louis sits in the heart of middle America and has remained a symbol of prosperity and travel for centuries. Hundreds of years before French settlers arrived in the 17th century, several Native American tribes populated the area that later became St. Louis and established a complex, influential urban center known today as the Cahokia Mounds. Later, when St. Louis was founded just 15 miles south of the convergence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, trade opened to the rest of the country and the city flourished.

Perhaps no landmark better represents a city’s past and present than the Gateway Arch and museum in downtown St. Louis. Completed in 1965, the mesmerizing 630-foot stainless steel structure stands as a monument to U.S. westward expansion and echoes its city’s nickname, “Gateway to the West,” earned after the early American expeditionists Lewis and Clark began and ended their journey in St. Louis. Today, the Arch is an unmistakable trademark of the city, reflecting sunlight from miles away like a sleek, self-sustaining beacon guiding travelers into the future.

Along with the Saint Louis Art Museum, which contains international works dating back thousands of years, a visitor-favorite is the City Museum in the downtown area. An interactive spectacle for all ages, the City Museum features hands-on exhibits weaving throughout the interior and exterior of an old warehouse, where artists, sculptors, and architects built new structures out of recycled industrial materials — all connected through walkways, slides, and secret tunnels. For a more natural experience, the Missouri Botanical Garden contains diverse plant life from all over the world, as well as the second-largest herbarium in North America. St. Louis is also known for its many breweries, where guests can tour the grounds and sample different styles.

Transportation

Given its large size, the St. Louis metropolitan area has many different modes of public transportation. Metro Transit operates a large light rail system called MetroLink, along with MetroBus and Metro Call-A-Ride. All Metro Transit options are equipped with various accessibility features. The St. Louis Area Agency on Aging (SLAAA) provides transportation options for residents 60 and above, including trips to medical appointments, grocery stores, and bank or government business. Visitors can also rent cars from all the major car rental companies or use ride-sharing services like Lyft and Uber, which may be more convenient in the suburban parts of the city.
