Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as individual support. Assisted living communities commonly offer outings for social activity, help with transit and appointments, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or skilled nursing. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, 24-hour care, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with distribution. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: preservation of resident dignity, working with residents with mental illness, promoting independence in activities of daily living, and behavior management. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority.
