Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides care, support, and assistance to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities frequently provide assistance with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and help with transportation and appointments. In some situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or “aging in place”. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with administration of medications, assistance with distribution, assistance with storage of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living . There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include working with residents with mental illness, preservation of resident dignity, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, and (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration.
